League of Legends ‘ second-biggest annual tournament has been delayed due to ongoing concerns over the coronavirus outbreak. In an announcement earlier today, global head of esports John Needham confirmed that the Mid-Season Invitational had been moved from May to July.
Needham said that the decision had been made to offer “the best chance to see travel restrictions lifted, allowing teams from leagues around the world to travel and compete safely.” There is currently no word on where the tournament will be held, but Riot says “we need to remain flexible given how much the COVID-19 situation has impacted international travel and live events for nearly every sports and entertainment property.”
The impact on MSI comes as little surprise. As well as the affect on travel, the outbreak has also delayed competition for China and Korea, two of League of Legends ‘ most competitive regions. With national leagues in those countries several weeks behind Europe and North America, Riot’s decision to delay is likely to help keep the tournament fair.Tags: .
