Summer Games Done Quick Will Be Online-Only This Year | Kotaku UK

Back in March, the organisers of charity speedrun-a-thon Summer Games Done Quick announced that the event would be delayed by a few weeks, bumped back from late July to mid August. It would appear, however, that those measures weren’t enough, as the physical manifestation of the event has now been cancelled entirely.
In a tweet last week, organisers said that “in light of Covid-19, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the on-site portion of [Summer Games Done Quick 2020] and instead proceed with an online-only event.” That event will be broadcast from the Games Done Quick studio, with participants performing from their own home.In light of COVID-19, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the on-site portion of #SGDQ2020 and instead proceed with an online-only event, Summer Games Done Quick 2020 Online.

It’s a shame, but also no great surprise that the event has been cancelled.A suite of other physical gatherings – from esports competitions to industry-wide expos – have either been forced online or been entirely cancelled, and GDQ’s initial bump down the schedule doesn’t seem to have been severe enough to make a difference. The event has, however, grown in popularity (and donations) year on year for a long time now, and with more people stuck at home, it could be another record-breaking turnout.
